The July, 2020 issue of HealthCareBusiness news includes an interview with BCSC researcher Karen Schifferdecker, PhD, MPH, for their special "Women's Health Imaging Section." The interview focuses on results from the recent BCSC paper in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, "Knowledge and Perception of Breast Density, Screening Mammography, and Supplemental Screening: in Search of “Informed.”" In the interview, Dr. Schifferdecker described the focus group study and findings which suggest that women are not well informed about breast density in general or in relation to their own personal risk. She emphasized the need to assist women in becoming more informed about their own breast density in combination with other potential risks to make more informed choices about screening, including supplemental imaging. Dr. Schifferdecker described other research which suggests that breast density notification laws may not be enough and recommended more tools be developed to assist women in getting a comprehensive understanding of their risk and choices, such as the BCSC risk calculator combined with videos or counseling that take into account the BCSC personal risk assessments.
