An article in the December 12, 2020 issue of The New York Times describes how the COVID-19 pandemic is leading to a major decline in routine medical tests and treatments, particularly in spring 2020 when many clinics were closed or operating with reduced services for months. These healthcare service interruptions included a large reduction in routine breast cancer screening, leading to millions of women missing or postponing their regular screening mammograms. The article highlights how BCSC investigators are exploring how this period of reduced screening is affecting patient outcomes using screening data collected during the pandemic. Funding for this work was highlighted in a previous BCSC blog post.
